Abstract

This paper presents the data of pike (Esox lusius L. 1758) growth in the reservoir Kruščica. The reservoir is situated in the mountainous part of Croatia, where the winters are longer and chillier than in other parts of the country. Other fish species that inhabit this reservoir are roach (Rutilus rutilus), drub (Leuciscus cephalus), dace (Leuciscus leuciscus), bleak (Alburnus alburnus), tench (Tinca tinca), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), grasscarp (Ctenopharingodon idella), silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), wells (Silurus glanis), ruffe (Crymnocephalus (Acerina) cernua) and pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus). Based on total length, Von Bertalanffy\'s growth curve of pike in Kruščica appears to be: Lt=142 (1-e-0.14 (t-0.5)) Compared to the growth pike attains in some other stagnant waters, the growth of pike in this reservoir appears to be fair, but in principle, it is higher than in many a river. Comparative growth index during the first ten life years of pike was 86.6% if compared to the standard growth curve published for the British isles. The overall growth performance (phi-prime) is: Φ\'=7.95. This value is almost the same as the one obtained from the British data (Φ \'=7.90).
