REGULATIONS ON THE EDITING AND PUBLISHING OF THE JOURNAL CROATIAN JOURNAL OF FISHERIES

Article 1

These Regulations define and harmonize the relationships and responsibilities of persons involved in the editing and publishing of the journal Croatian Journal of Fisheries (hereinafter referred to as: CJF).

The journal is registered as follows:

  • Title: Croatian Journal of Fisheries
  • Secondary title: Ribarstvo
  • Abbreviated title: CJF
  • ISSN: 1330-061X (print edition)
  • ISSN: 1848-0586 (electronic edition)

Article 2

The publishers of CJF are the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Zagreb, Svetošimunska 25, Zagreb, and the Sciendo Bogumiła Zuga 32A, 01-811 Warsaw, Poland

Article 3

The registered office of the journal is located at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Agriculture, Svetošimunska 25, Zagreb.

Article 4

Scope of the Journal

CJF is a scientific journal that publishes original and review scientific papers, short and preliminary communications, professional papers, and other contributions from the scientific fields of biotechnical, natural, and related sciences, primarily within the field of fisheries and related disciplines.

CJF publishes papers written in English and Croatian and is open to all authors.

Article 5

Publication Frequency

One volume is published annually, consisting of four issues, in both print and electronic formats. The electronic edition is available on the website of the University of Zagreb Faculty of Agriculture.

Article 6

Aims of the Journal

The aims of the journal are to:

  1. Contribute to the advancement of knowledge and experience in fisheries, particularly to the development of scientific approaches to solving fisheries-related problems.
  2. Promote the international character of the journal and foster scientific research cooperation at national, regional, and global levels.
  3. Act as a high-quality, open, and friendly forum in which all authors have the opportunity to present their ideas, results, and experiences, which will be discussed in an impartial and constructive manner, and where appropriate, receive assistance in shaping scientifically sound manuscripts.
  4. Promote scientific integrity and research ethics.

Article 7

Editorial Board Structure

The Editorial Board consists of:

  1. Editor-in-Chief
  2. President of the Editorial Board
  3. Members of the Editorial Board
  4. Honorary Members of the Editorial Board

The Editor-in-Chief shall be an Assistant Professor to Full Professor, or a Research Associate to Scientific Advisor, from the fields of biotechnical, natural, or related sciences, within fisheries or related disciplines.

Members of the Editorial Board are scientific and teaching staff from the Republic of Croatia (domestic Editorial Board members) and scientists from abroad (international Editorial Board members).

The Editor-in-Chief and the President of the Editorial Board together constitute the Managing Board.

Article 8

Duties of the Editor-in-Chief

The duties of the Editor-in-Chief include:

  1. Representing and promoting the journal in the national and international scientific community.
  2. Preparing and submitting applications for financial support for the journal in accordance with the guidelines of the competent Ministry.
  3. Managing CJF financial resources provided by the competent Ministry and other sources, in accordance with Editorial Board decisions.
  4. Informing authors of manuscript receipt.
  5. Conducting an initial evaluation of manuscripts and deciding on further procedures.
  6. Informing authors if a manuscript is unsuitable for peer review due to its topic, quality, or technical preparation.
  7. Selecting appropriate reviewers.
  8. Receiving and evaluating reviews and deciding on further actions.
  9. Informing authors of the manuscript status according to reviewer recommendations:
    • (a) acceptable after minor revision
    • (b) acceptable after moderate revision
    • (c) reconsidered after major revision
    • (d) not acceptable for publication
  10. Making the final decision on manuscript status after revision.
  11. Submitting an annual report to the Editorial Board.

Article 9

Duties of the President of the Editorial Board

The duties of the President include:

  1. Promoting the journal in accordance with agreed objectives.
  2. Coordinating communication between Editorial Board members and the Editor-in-Chief.
  3. Preparing agendas, convening and chairing Editorial Board meetings, keeping minutes, and distributing them to all domestic Editorial Board members.
  4. Assisting the Editor-in-Chief in selecting appropriate reviewers.
  5. After completion of the peer-review process:
    • sending manuscripts for language editing,
    • overseeing technical editing,
    • sending manuscripts to authors for final corrections,
    • preparing PDFs for the “online first” website,
    • uploading PDFs to the “online first” section,
    • sending materials for layout preparation for the printed edition,
    • publishing papers on the website after final layout for print,
  6. Monitoring website traffic and usage statistics.

Article 10

Duties of Editorial Board Members and Honorary Members

The duties include:

  1. Promoting the journal in accordance with agreed objectives.
  2. Assisting the Editor-in-Chief in selecting or proposing suitable reviewers within their field of expertise.
  3. Conducting peer reviews within their area of expertise.
  4. Publishing their own papers in CJF, where appropriate.
  5. Regularly monitoring scientific conferences and encouraging publication of conference papers in CJF as guest editors.
  6. Encouraging the development of thematic issues dedicated to specific scientific topics.

Article 11

Appointment and Term of Office of the Editor-in-Chief and President

The Editor-in-Chief and the President of the Editorial Board are appointed by the Editorial Board members. Their term of office is five years, with the possibility of reappointment.

Former Editors-in-Chief and Presidents become Honorary Members of the Editorial Board.

Article 12

Appointment and Term of Office of Editorial Board Members

Editorial Board members are appointed for a five-year term. Upon reappointment, the following criteria shall be considered:

  • publication of papers in CJF
  • willingness to cooperate for the benefit of CJF

Honorary Members hold their position for life.

Article 13

Dismissal Procedure

The Managing Board and Editorial Board members may propose dismissal of an Editorial Board member or the Editor-in-Chief if inactivity hinders the development of the journal or disrupts the work of the Editorial Board to the detriment of the journal’s success.

The decision on dismissal is made at a convened meeting of the Editorial Board.

Article 14

Remuneration

  • Editor-in-Chief: entitled to remuneration depending on journal income.
  • President of the Editorial Board: entitled to remuneration depending on journal income.
  • Editorial Board Members: membership is unpaid; exceptionally active members may receive remuneration depending on journal income. Each member receives one complimentary copy of CJF.
  • Reviewers: peer review is unpaid; each reviewer receives a certificate upon completion of the review.

Article 15

Publication Procedure

All scientific papers published in CJF must undergo peer review by at least two reviewers. Domestic reviewers are scientific and teaching staff from the Republic of Croatia. Where possible, international peer review is encouraged, with at least one reviewer from abroad.

The pool of reviewers must be broader than the Editorial Board membership.

Reviews may be conducted in Croatian for authors from Croatian-speaking regions (including Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Montenegro), and in English for international authors, using the CJF review form.

Manuscripts submitted to CJF must not be submitted elsewhere. Once accepted, the manuscript may not be published in another journal.

Article 16

Entry into Force

These Regulations enter into force upon adoption at the Editorial Board meeting.

Article 17

Transitional Provisions

The appointment of Editorial Board members and the Editor-in-Chief shall commence after adoption of these Regulations at the first subsequent Editorial Board meeting.
