Abstract

This paper presents data on pike spread, its morphological description and biology of species. The dynamics of the length growth in some waters is described, as well as the economic value. Only one species of the Escoidae family lives in Croatia: the pike - Esox lucius L. 1758. It inhabits plain waters in the Danube basin, and in the Adriatic basin it lives in waters of Istria, in the Vrana lake on the island of Cres and in the Gacka river. Pike growth depends on water characteristics and on food quantity. Table 1 gives data on pike growth in some waters in Croatia. In all the waters good growth of pike has been found, especially in the Lonja river. In terms of its economic value, pike is very important. It is interesting for breeding in fish farms and for catching in open waters. 22 to 23 tons of pike per year is being caught in Croatia lately.
