Abstract

Taking the fact that the introduction of pike-perch - Stizostedion lucioperca L. has a substantial impact on the diversity of ichthyofauna as a starting point, the population of this species in the Neretva river reservoirs (Jablanica, Grabovica and Salakovac) was investigated in this paper. The fishing was performed in October 1999 and April 2000 using a drift net and an electric fishing generator. The fish sample was fixed in a 4% solution of formaldehyde, while laboratory processing was performed at the Faculty of Natural Science and Mathematics of the University of Sarajevo. A total of 442 individual pieces of 10 fish species of 4 families were fished. Salmonidae family was represented by three species: brown trout (Salmo trutta m. fario L.), lake trout (Salmo trutta m. lacustris L.) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Wal.). Five species from Cyprinidae family were found: Adriatic dace (Leuciscus svallize svallize Heck. Et Kn.), white chub (Leuciscus cephalus albus Bon.), minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus L.), crucian carp (Carassius auratus gibelio Bl.) and common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.). Cobitidae family was represented by the species of spined loach (Cobitis taenia L.), while Percidae family was represented by the species of pikeperch (Stizostedion lucioperca L.). The population of the introduced species of pike-perch was most represented in terms of quantity in Jablanica reservoir (25. 42%), then in Salakovac reservoir (6. 84%) and finally in Grabovica reservoir (3. 85%). The age structure was representedby individuals 0+ to 7+, and there was a rather balanced sex proportion. Based on the results of the investigation of the pike-perch population in the Neretva river iilakeslo, it can be concluded that it is growing with a tendency of spreading across the Neretva river basin of the Adriatic sea in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is necessary to take measures in order to reduce the quantity of this species as well as to attempt to revitalize indigenous fish populations.
