Abstract
The changes of macroinvertebrates´ biomass in the summer epilitic periphyton of the river Sava upstream from Zagreb, Croatia have been investigated for several years. The domination of Amphipoda was outstanding (Table 1), the development of Trichoptera, Gastropoda and Hirudinea was prominent from time to time, while the development of Ephemeroptera and Turbellaria was lowr. The significant negative correlations (p<0.05) were determined between Hirudinea and total biomass of other macroinvertebrates, as well as Trichoptera from cases. High negative correlations were also detected between Hirudinea and Amphipoda, Ephemeroptera and free Trichoptera (Table 2, 3) but not for Gastropoda (p>0,05). The development of the same animal groups at two locations was simultaneous and represented by high positive correlations (Table 4). The results of the sampling of epilitic periphyton of other seasons and of benthos from sandy and gravel substrates were also presented in this paper. At the same time the pysical and chemical investigations of water quality at these locations were conducted (Table 5).
